ST. NORBERT ABBEY
DE PERE, WISCONSIN, U.S.A.
AND
OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION ABBEY
DAYLESFORD, PENNSYLVANIA, U.S.A.
R.D. Alexander R. Arendt, O. Praem.
b. Thursday, Mar. 15, 1928 – d. Friday, Feb. 5, 1988

Our brother Alexander Arendt was born in Racine, Wisconsin in 1928.

A short stint (1946-47) with the U. S. Army in Japan prepared him for college life.  After his sophomore year at the college, he joined the Order and was vested in 1950, professed in 1952 and ordained in 1956.

He served on the faculty of Bishop Newmann High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for one year, and then served for seventeen years at Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware where he taught English and German, and eventually became drama coach and registrar - as well as Superior of the Community.

He earned an M.A. degree in Modern Languages in 1963 from Villanova University.

For several years (1976-1979) he was associate pastor of St. John Patrish in Essexville, Michigan.  In his final years he ministered as guest master and part of the abbey's Institute for Religion and Culture.

As a man of deep spirituality, Alex was a much sought-after confessor and spiritual director.  His kindness and non-threatening personality endeared him to all, as did his love of food.

After mopping his balding head with his handkerchief after a big bowl of pepper-pot soup and a glass of Chianti, he was often heard to exclaim: “Oooo!  Oooo!  Oooo!”

Alex was found dead in his room at Daylesford on Friday, February 5, 1988.  He was 60.

If you have a photograph of this Norbertine, we would love to hear from you.
