ST. NORBERT ABBEY
DE PERE, WISCONSIN, U.S.A.
R.D. John L. Barnard, O. Praem.
b. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 1912 – d. Tuesday, May 15, 1984

Our brother John Barnard was born in Green Bay in 1912.  After graduating from St. Norbert High, he joined the Order in 1930 and was solemnly professed in 1935, and immediately assigned to Southeast Catholic.

After only a year there, he contracted tuberculosis and spent the next year at Hickory Grove Sanatorium in DePere for recuperation.  In 1937, he assisted at St. Willibrord in Chicago until 1939.

“Claude”, as he was called, taught at St. Norbert High and the college in 1940, and in 1941, was again appointed to Southeast Catholic, where he was a guidance counselor.  In 1961, he taught at Premontre, in ’63 at Abbot Pennings, ’and in 1964 at Bishop Neumann.  Claude was known for his mild manner, compassion and understanding.  The students loved him as a confessor and were unafraid to reveal their inmost problems to him.

Claude returned to the abbey in  1966, and in 1973 was a patient at Borneman Nursing home, where he died on Tuesday, May 15, 1984 at the age of 72.

If you have a photograph of this Norbertine, we would love to hear from you.
