Father Lambert Broens is at right.

Our brother Lambert Broens (BRUNZ) was born in Weert, Holland in 1866, vested at Berne Abbey in 1886, and solemnly professed in 1888.

On November 13, 1893, he arrived with Bernard Pennings and Brother Servatius as the first missionaries to the United States from Berne Abbey.  Lambert was appointed to assist his brother, Alphonse Broens in Sturgeon Bay , who had suggested to the bishop of Green Bay that the Norbertines might be the Order to squelch the heresy that was developing in the Belgian Peninsula .

In 1894, Lambert became the pastor of Tonet, with missions at Robinsonville, “La Chapelle,” Walhain and Thiry Dames.  With the move to DePere in 1898, he was appointed pastor of Old St. Joe’s and sub-prior of the house.

In 1900, Lambert was transferred as pastor to St. Willibrord in Chicago, the first Dutch parish in that city, where he remained until 1908, when he became ill.  He died Sunday, June 7, 1908 at the age of 41.
