Our
brother Hugh DeKort was born in Waalwijk,
Holland
in 1882 and was vested at
Berne
Abbey in 1900. Hugh arrived in the United States
in 1905, as the 22nd recruit from Berne, and made his solemn profession at the National Shrine.
In
1906, Hugh was installed as the first resident pastor of Immaculate Conception
Parish in
Oneida. The Knights of
Columbus
paid him $500 as one-half of his yearly salary.
Previous to that time,
Oneida
had been a mission to Freedom, but when Bernard Pennings took over the
obligations of the National Shrine, he also took over the mission of service to
the Native Americans.
1911
found Hugh back at the priory as master of novices.
In 1916, he became pastor of St. Peter’s in
Lincoln
,
Wisconsin, where he died Friday,
April 18, 1947, at the age of 65.
