ST. NORBERT ABBEY
DE PERE, WISCONSIN, U.S.A.
Rev. Ambrose L. Dobbelsteen, O. Praem.
b. Monday, Mar. 11, 1878 – d. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1947

Our brother Ambrose Dobbelsteen was born in Heeswijk, Holland in 1878.  He was vested in Berne Abbey in 1895 and professed solemn vows there in 1900.  Already known for his musical talent, he was made succentor (suck-CHEN-tor) in 1905.

Ambrose immigrated to the United States in 1912, and was the last of the 26 Norbertines Berne was to send to their American mission.

After having taught at the college since his arrival, he was appointed pastor of St. Martin in Tonet in 1922.  There he continued composing sacred music for masses and hymns as he had at the college.  He returned to the abbey frequently to teach the juniors music and to prepare them for singing at mass.

Ambrose died in Tonet on Tuesday, November 18, 1947, at the age of 69

If you have a photograph of this Norbertine, we would love to hear from you.
