Our
brother Gabriel Hinkes was born in
LeRoy
,
Wisconsin
in 1909. After graduating from the
Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz, "Gabe"
joined the Order in 1932 and was solemnly professed in 1937.
That same year, he was assigned to Archmere, where he taught German and
religion. After being transferred to
the college in 1942, he was appointed master of novices in
Madison
in 1943. From 1946 until 1953, he
was on the faculty of Southeast Catholic, after which he became pastor in
Hingham
, Montana
.
In
1956, Gabe was appointed pastor of
St. Joseph
Italian Parish in
Madison
until the
University
of
Wisconsin
acquired the property. In 1959, he
broke ground for the new
St. Joseph
parish on the beltway, moving there in 1961 and remaining until his retirement
to the abbey in 1978.
Putting
his sewing skills to use, Gabe mended habits, altered trousers, replaced zippers
and blessed countless quarts of Epiphany water for devotional use by those of
like mind. He
died on
Friday, October 9, 1998 at the age of 89.
