Our brother Andrew Micke was born
in Dundas
, Illinois
in 1908. After graduating from St.
Norbert High and the college, he joined the Order in 1927 and was solemnly
professed in 1932.
With a
bachelor’s degree in hand from the college, he began teaching biology there in
1930. In 1934, along with the other
“Founding 16” he joined the faculty at Southeast Catholic.
Spending his summers at Camp
Tivoli
, he was the Riding Master from 1938 until 1941.
Andy
was appointed to Central Catholic in 1942 and moved on to Premontre, when the
new school opened in 1955. On sick
leave from teaching from 1956 on, Andy held the position of assistant pastor at
St. Willibrord, Green Bay, Lincoln, Wisconsin and Cut Bank and Hingham
, Montana
.
“Poor
Father,” as he called himself, retired to the abbey in 1965.
Though not always responsible for his actions, Andy was clever enough
never to break a rule. For example, no
one was permitted to be on the ground floor of the abbey without wearing a habit
unless he was going out. Andy never
appeared on the ground floor without a golf club in his hand so he could explain
at any hour that he was about to go out to hit a few!
While
watching television on day, Andy
slipped away so quietly and peacefully, other confreres in the room were not
aware of his passing for several minutes. He died on Saturday, April 12,
1975 at the
age of 67.
