ST. NORBERT ABBEY

Rev. George F. O’Brien, O. Praem.
b. Friday, Aug. 24, 1917 – d. Monday, May 8, 1989

Our brother George O’Brien was born in Stamford , Connecticut in 1917.  After high school, George worked in New York City for 7 years before entering the college.  After a year at the college, he joined the Order in 1943, and was solemnly professed in 1948.

In 1946, George began teaching at St. Norbert High, and after ordination in 1949, he was assigned to Southeast Catholic where he taught English.  While there, he was assistant chaplain at the Newman Club at Drexel University , spending his summers at Villanova, from where he earned an M.A. in English in 1956.

In 1959, with the move of St. Norbert High to the vacated West DePere Public School to become Abbot Pennings High School , George was appointed vice-principal, teacher, and guidance counselor.

Continuing his education during the summers of 1960-1962 at Marquette, and 1963-1964 at Harvard, he upgraded his credentials and from 1965 to 1969, taught English at the college, was the dean of men, and chaplain at Hickory Grove Sanatorium.

From 1969 to 1974, George was a professor of English and director of housing at St. Thomas College , in St. Paul , Minnesota .  From 1974-1977 he was director of resident students, guidance counselor and teacher of English at St. Thomas Academy .

George became associate pastor of St. Michael Parish in Greenwich, Connecticut from 1978 until 1981, and then at St. Luke’s in Westport, Connecticut, until 1983, when he retired to St. Norbert Priory at Bishop Neumann High School.  He died on Monday, May 8, 1989 at the age of 71.
