Öfed (Öved / Öfved), Skåne, Sweden
. . . THIS MAY TAKE A MOMENT OR TWO . . .
This is Ofed (pronounced: Er-vet) as seen from the palatial estate gardens on the other side of the Residence building (seen here in the distance) from the entry court. The property has been owned by the famous Ramel family for many generations, and they keep it opened to the public. |
|
This is the main entry road into Ofed.
As you turn around, you can see how the main entryway continues through the "front gate" of this site.
Looking through the front gate, you are struck by Ofed's similarity to Prémontré (though on a smaller scale), so much so that it is called by some the "Prémontré of the North."
Remnants of the old cloister walls were incorporated into the secular castle during and after Reformation times.
Looking to the left in the entry court, one sees 17th - 18th century buildings. These are the gift shop and coffee shop for visitors.
Looking straight ahead in the entry court, one sees the Residence building
A closer view. | |
To the right in the entry court, one sees residence buildings for servants and service buildings.
Some very old structures remain however. This may have been the remains of the Abbey Church, which has been converted into residence rooms by the Ramel family.
A very old stable building near the front gate of the entry court may be original.
A barn, restored in the 19th century, but said to lay on original foundations (the stone work below the brick).
Other very old service buildings behind the whitewashed buildings of the entry court.
A giant Maypole erected by the Remel family to celebrate midsummer -- a tradition most probably observed by the Confreres resident here back to the earliest times.
Åsum (pronounced: "awesome") parish, which dates to the late 12th century, and is located less than 2 kilometers from Öfved
Another view of Åsum, with its typically "Danish" design / style. |
