Monasticon Praemonstratense: (I, 310)
Elm Number: 308*
History:
Founded in the time of King Wenceslaus in Prague, 1140 as a Canonry. The abbey church as well as the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary were elevated to the honor of basilicas by Pope John Paul II on November 6, 1991. During the Communist tyranny, the Abbey served as the Museum of Czech / Slovak Literature. In 1996 the Premonstratensian Order triumphantly reestablished an Abbey here.
Note:
This abbey holds the blessed remains of the Founder of the Premonstratensian Order, St. Norbert. His relics were removed to this location from Magdeburg in the 16th century after long negotiations between Catholic and Lutheran officials.
